In an effort to collect valuable data for individual breeders and the Shorthorn breed and in an attempt to ad value to Shorthorn genetics, the American Shorthorn Association will be sponsoring two Proof Positive Feedlot locations for delivery in the fall of 2005.
On the East Coast, cattle will be fed by Masonic Village in Elizabethtown, PA. Frank and the Masonic Village staff are accustomed to feeding Shorthorn cattle and already custom feed for other Shorthorn breeders. Complete carcass data will be collected with the harvest site will be dependent on profit potential.
Kugler Feedlot in Cozad, NE will be the second location. Lane Kugler has had success feeding Shorthorn for McMillan Shorthorn for over ten years and desires to build relations with other Shorthorn operations. They are centrally located to packing plants of most of the major packers and conveniently located 5 miles off of I-80.
Minimum number of head is five per producer with no maximum. Cattle are to be delivered from October 17th to October 18th, weighing 550 – 750 lbs. Producers will retain ownership with all feed financed. All feed, yardage, interest, processing, and data collection charges will be withheld from the final payment at the end of the trial with a $50 consignor fee to be paid to ASA shortly after delivery. A short adaptation period will precede the official start of the trail. Recognition will be given to high individuals and pens based on physical and financial performance.
Due to commingling of cattle from across the country, proper vaccination protocol is extremely important. All cattle should be given 4-way viral shots and boosters, 7-way Clostridial and Pasturella. Cattle should also be wormed, dehorned, castrated and weaned for 30 days.
